This weekend, most people working in construction will have a long weekend to celebrate Memorial Day, and honor in our hearts those who died serving our country.
Growing up, I remember spending Memorial Day weekend visiting cemeteries where my family’s loved ones were laid to rest, both veterans and non-veterans.
Yesterday, I saw on Facebook that my cousin’s son was accepted into the Navy. I was pleased to see the encouragement that the post was receiving, despite all the mixed emotions concerning the military in this country. Men such as these who serve our beloved country ensure we remain The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.
We have many people in our cherished construction industry who also serve every day fearlessly on job-sites despite the fact that every day in America there is a construction fatality.
This Memorial Day, we are featuring articles we have written in the past that provide you with an opportunity to honor those who served in the Military, as well as those who lost their lives in both the Military and in Construction.

Wow! This is so profound and true. It almost seems as if most of us Americans take these honorable sacrifices for granted and many of us have become lackadaisical, maybe even feeling a little entitled to the safety and freedom that we are privileged to enjoy every day. I try and thank any known Veterans at work or if I see them in uniform on the street, I always stop and say to them, “Thank you for your service to our country”, they always smile and say “Thank you” It feels as though we both come away feeling good, I show my appreciation and they feel acknowledged and appreciated. It’s a great feeling. It also gives them a sense of pride and a confirmation that it is not all in vain, they are doing something good and it is worth it and people do care. As you mentioned, in regard to or fallen construction workers, I agree, we should honor them as well. Just think, someone built the houses we live in and the buildings that we work in. Blood, sweat and probably tears went into some of these structures and we are oblivious to these sacrifices. If we would just appreciate and respect our fellow man / woman accordingly, we might cover most of the bases. Thank you for making me stop and think.
