Is Additional Personnel the Answer?
People are not your most important asset
THE RIGHT PEOPLE ARE!

Currently the Construction Industry in South Florida offers abundant business opportunities.  That’s the good news.  The bad news is industry demographics.  There are cost of living increases, diversity of family life and augmented social pressures.  Escalated commute times, more competition in each area of specialty and better educated internal and external associates are present.  Our industry changed from predominately hard bid to design-build / CM at risk.  Material cost increases and extended material lead times, along with all the other factors, are triggering construction professionals to question if their passion for the industry is strong enough to override the challenges.

Frustration sets in when employers and employees end each day feeling like they just started.  Many people in our industry have gone from the days zooming by because they love what they do, to the days zooming by from survival mode.  How can you as leaders in your organization bring back the passion and balance?

When personal relationships are failing, and help is sought on the subject, the usual first step is to start setting aside a block of hours/days in your schedule.  The person or people are advised to reevaluate how they arrived at the current status in the relationship, the tools and resources they currently have to work with and where the status of their heart lies.  They are asked to evaluate commitment levels.  Once all of these are determined, then a plan is established to redirect in a positive direction.

If you noticed, I avoided using the word “time.”  Time, a precious commodity, seems so difficult to come by these days and very difficult to manage. As a business leader, consider time as:

Total

Industry

Management

Evaluation

Mr. Webster defines the following:

Total = to add up all the parts

Industry = A distinct group of productive or profit-making enterprises

Management = the act of directing or carrying on business affairs

Evaluation = to determine the significance or worth of, by careful appraisal and study

Bottom line:  Take time to determine if the people you employ and the clients and vendors you engage in business are allowing you to direct your business affairs in the construction industry toward higher profits through positive relationships.

While hiring new people to join your team, apply the same concept of TIME.  Make sure you take the hours needed to fully evaluate all the parts.  Evaluate their skill, industry knowledge, personality, financial and personal requirements, goals and expectations.  Be sure that you will be able to carry on your business affairs for higher profits and overall quality of life.  Employing a new positive relationship to share in building and maintaining existing relationships both on your internal team (those employed by you) and external team (vendors, clients, consultants) will only help you and your associates to maintain or regain synergy.  Adding another person to your company may not be the answer until you take Total Industry Management Evaluation.  Are you and your current staff working smart and profitably?  For a questionnaire to help you determine the need to add another person, please visit our website.

Worth Reading

Cure for the Common Life
By Max Lucado

Bestselling author Lucado (Come Thirsty) dedicates his latest book to helping readers discover their "sweet spot"—the job or life calling they were created for. He guides readers on their search to find the unique abilities God may have built into them.

First step: "read your life backward" to see where you've been successful and what you've loved in the past. Readers are directed to find their personal "S.T.O.R.Y." – strengths, topic, optimal conditions, relationships and "Yes!" moments. This acronym originates   with   People   Management Inc., whose theories helped Lucado find his own strengths and form much of the foundation for this book. For Lucado, discovering one's life purpose is really about honoring the God who gave the unique abilities in the first place, so he instructs readers not to make decisions based on greed. Instead, he exhorts them to "make a big deal out of God" rather than worrying about their own reputation and to trust God to use their "small beginnings" in his overall purpose.

The book contains a "Sweet Spot Discovery Guide" with detailed exercises from People Management to help readers uncover their own personal "S.T.O.R.Y." — though some will want further guidance. As always, evangelical readers will appreciate that Lucado is easy to read while still substantive and orthodox, and many struggling to find the work that's right for them will find this book very helpful.       Copyright Reed Business Information
