Book Worth Reading

Freakonomics

by Steven D. Levitt

and Stephen J. Dubner

During one of my many conversations on perception this book was recommended to me. It is an interesting fun read, challenging the reader to explore their own perceptions compared to reality. The authors, Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, cover topics such as crime, naming your baby, parenting, HIV, and the IRS.

While reading it at times I thought to myself “TMI” Too Much Information and some things are just better not to know. The authors compare people and things that you wouldn’t think had any relation at all and he shows the common bonds. It is amazing that he can even predict the most popular girls and boys names for the year 2015 which is derived from “smart” databases that take high end names of today which become the mainstream names of tomorrow.

Enjoy the read!

How does Handlebars for the

Holidays work?

In cooperation with the Boys & Girls Club of Broward, Dade and the Palm Beaches; Kids in Distress; Children’s Home Society; Barton’s Boosters; Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital; and other local agencies, Associated Builders & Contractors will work to identify children who have never owned a bicycle.  We then invite all of those children, along with their parents or guardians, to our annual giveaway.  All bicycles are tagged with a thank you note - in return for getting their new bicycle we ask the kids to write us a note about what their new bicycle means to them.  These notes then become the content for our annual book.

History of Handlebars for the Holidays!

Over the past 11 years, people from across the community have worked together to put smiles on the faces of over 4,100 children during this heartwarming event.  These donors come from within the Construction Industry, Business Community as well as many individuals – all joining forces to make sure that the children receive their brand new bicycles with locks and helmets.  Most of the children have never owned a bicycle before and if not for your generosity may never get the chance to own one.

How can I make a contribution to Handlebars for the Holidays?

Contributions can be made by visiting the Associated Builders & Contractors website; OR if you are up for some friendly competition, we will honor the company that raises the most money in EACH county (Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach) with a luncheon for ten people and they will be invited to help us personally distribute the brand new bicycles at the annual giveaway.  There are many different ways to raise money – office pools, raffles, internal company contests and company matching of employee donations.

When/Where is Handlebars for the Holidays held?

This year, Handlebars for the Holidays will be held on Saturday, December 8th at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale; where we will be distributing more than 500 brand new bicycles, locks and helmets.

*If you would like to donate any products/services to our event, if you would simply like to see the delight on a child’s face as they receive their new bicycle or if you need additional information please call the Associated Builders & Contractors office at 954-984-0075.

The Cardinal Gibbons High School wrapping booth will be open from November 23rd through December 24th.  The booth is located on the first floor by Dillard’s entrance and the food court at the Galleria Mall. In general, they will be open weekdays from 10 am – 9 pm and on weekends from 10 am – 7pm.  All proceeds raised at the booth will benefit the Cardinal Gibbons Music Department which includes the Jazz Band, Orchestra, Pep Band, Winter Concert Band and Chorus.  The music department will hold performances throughout the holidays at the mall.

Bulk wrapping, tagged and delivered for Associations and Corporations is available.

   NATO Phonetic

    Alphabet

The NATO Phonetic Alphabet was developed in the 1950s to be intelligible (and pronounceable) to all NATO allies in the heat of battle. It replaced other phonetic alphabets, for example the US military "able baker" alphabet.

The NATO Phonetic Alphabet is now widely used in business and telecommunications in Europe and North America. There are dozens of other standards in use throughout the world, but then the great thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from.

• Receiving Only From God by Os Hillman, www.marketplaceleaders.org

I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me-to Aner, Eshcol and Mamre. Let them have their share. - Genesis 14:24

Abraham's nephew was a man named Lot. Lot was part of Abraham's household until the land on which they fed their flocks could no longer support their growing families and herds. Abraham allowed Lot to choose the land where he wanted to live. Lot chose the land of Sodom.

Afterwards, four kings invaded Sodom, and Lot's family and goods were taken into captivity. When Abraham learned of this, he immediately gathered his best fighting men and pursued the armies to free Lot and his family. He was successful in freeing Lot's family and the families of Sodom. The king of Sodom was grateful to Abraham for what he did and wanted him to keep the goods he recovered. Abraham had made a decision before the battle that he would only keep what he recovered for his nephew Lot, and goods as payment for the men who fought.

Abraham understood the principle of receiving from God. He was a man with great integrity in God. He did not want to be known as someone who became wealthy because of the kindness of a wicked king.

He wanted others to know that whatever prosperity he gained was a result of the blessing from God's hand alone. Abraham understood an important principle of receiving from God.

Jesus also modeled this principle by receiving only what His Father wanted Him to receive. God's will for Jesus was to receive based on a carpenter's wage even though He was the God of the universe who had access to all things. Imagine the discipline Jesus had to have, knowing what He could have had. He upheld His own financial integrity in God.

Each of us must discern what comes from the hand of God rather than the hand of man. As workplace believers, there are situations that allow us to manipulate, sweat, and toil our way to profit. There is also profit as a result of hard work done in obedience to our calling to the workplace. Knowing the difference in these two concepts is a sign of integrity before God. Only God receives glory when we receive what God wants us to receive. Are you receiving the fruit of your labor in God? Ask God to show you the difference of these two concepts for your own life.
