Combat Boots to Hardhats – What you can do to help our Veterans

For a military member, the transition from their military career to a civilian career can be quite jarring. For many service members the only experience they have with an employer is what they have gained in the military, which can be difficult to translate into terms that a civilian employer can relate to. They may oversell certain skills, undersell others, and include jargon that is incomprehensible to an employer if the employer does not have familiarity with military terminology. In our November edition of the FLCC Newsletter, we explore what veterans and business owners can do to bridge the communication gap so both can pursue a possible match for employment.

Helping our veterans find gainful employment is one of the best ways to show that we honor their service and their sacrifice. There are many veteran focused charities out there that help veterans find meaningful employment after their service and help them navigate the transition from their military career into a successful civilian career. You can show your support by partnering with these charities to bring veterans into your organization.

Call of Duty Endowment: Provides grants to charities that help veterans compete for high-quality jobs in multiple industries including the construction industry.

Project: Return to Work: Provides free employment services to veterans, spouses and family members including specialized vocational evaluations, career counseling, and more.

Wounded Warrior Project: Works directly with employers to connect them with qualified veteran candidates in addition to providing resources for employers that will help them successfully onboard a veteran.

There are many ways that you can help veterans secure a civilian career after their service ends. Donating to these and other veteran focused charities is but one way that you can show you honor their commitment, sacrifice, and service. Veterans bring invaluable skills to the workforce. If you are looking for advice or assistance with integrating a veteran into your workforce, contact the Career Matchmakers at Florida Construction Connection. We work with employers just like you to ensure that you have the right candidates and skills you need to grow your business.
